‘Tis the season!

06 December 2017
LINDSAY WRIGHT

‘Tis the season! I love the winter season, especially the month of December. I love the decorations, the beautiful décor, the holiday parties, the wonderful food and the loud, crowded and busy shopping malls. I even enjoy listening to the many versions of holiday songs played over and over and of course each year I look forward to Michael Buble’s new Christmas album.

It is not just because of our events, Light Up the Beach or Photos in the Park with Santa, it is because of the season. In our community it really is the season of giving. We raise money for a couple of organizations throughout the year. The Rotary Club benefits from our Santa in the Park. Photos with Santa are a great way to get up close and personal with Santa at the historical Gardener’s Cottage in Kew Park. Light Up the Beach benefits our local hospital The Michael Garron Hospital (formerly Toronto East General). Both are holiday events that brings the Beach and surrounding communities together, as we share in the pride we have for our waterfront. These are the perfect events to get our communities into the holiday spirit; following Santa as he walks the Boardwalk, lighting majestic trees and bringing the Boardwalk to life with a spectacular display of more than 80,000 holiday lights! These are the activities that mark the start of the holiday season for me and for many of us.

The anticipation of spending time with family and friends is the one thing many of us look forward to the most. I am looking forward to spending quality time with my family this holiday season. I look forward to ugly sweaters, tree decorating and puzzles with very small pieces.

This year as we focus our support on Mental Health and Addiction Services at Michael Garron Hospital (MGH) I am reminded of the large number of people in our community who are less fortunate and struggle with mental health and addiction issues. MGH has the most comprehensive mental health program of any general hospital in the city, providing a continuum of innovative, compassionate care including: child, adolescent and adult emergency, inpatient and outpatient services; community outreach; and withdrawal management programs. This is an award-winning community and teaching facility that takes great pride in its tradition of providing excellent care to everyone who comes through its doors. To accomplish this, partnerships are essential to help support  these patient-care programs. In 2018 both DeClute and Wright Sisters real estate groups have committed to making a donation each time we sell a house for the entire year. As a local family owned business, we know the value of supporting our local hospital, and the services they can offer our community.

We are proud to also be providing meals for our neighbours at Out of the Cold. There are so many wonderful programs in our community. ‘Tis the season to enjoy, to give and to be aware of those in our community who need us the most. I love the month of December in the east end mostly because of our great community. The shops are beautiful, the houses look amazing and most of all the community comes together and supports each other. We have a wonderful BIA, so shop local, support our wonderful community and enjoy!
