Home maintenance tips for Fall

We are grateful for this past summer but it is coming to an end, the days are becoming shorter, the grass is growing slower and the colours are changing. Yes, soon it will be time for a final lawn cutting and clean up.

As Thanksgiving approaches and the talk of gratitude over the big upcoming meal gets closer, we can take a breath and focus on something very important to us — our clients!  At our office this is a time to reach out to each of our past clients and offer them a freshly baked pumpkin pie to have with their Thanksgiving feast.  

Fall is a great time to do a big yard clean-up and some fall maintenance on your house. We reached out to a few of our our favourite home inspectors and asked them what they suggest you do to look after things in your home. 

YOUR FALL MAINTENANCE CHECKLIST 

This Fall it’s important to prepare your home for the upcoming winter. Here’s a few helpful tips.

  • Turn off any outdoor faucets and ensure exterior pipes are drained of water. Frozen pipes can burst and cause serious damage to your home.
  • Arrange to have your furnace inspected sooner rather than later. Replace any filters or have them cleaned. This will ensure an efficient furnace this winter.
  • Look for any potential heat loss points in your home. Seal up any window or door frames. Inspect any other gaps on the exterior of your house and make sure they are sealed up to keep the welcome elements in and the unwanted out.
  • Before cozying up in front of the fire, have your chimney inspected, if necessary have it swept. This will prevent any potential chimney fires caused by a build up of creosote.
  • Clear your eaves troughs and gutters of debris. Check that they are structurally sound and flowing without obstruction.
  • Inspect your shingles, the winter can inflict serious stress to your roof, which in turn can potentially cause expensive internal damage. If you suspect that there is any potential wear and tear, call a reputable roofer to inspect and repair your roof if necessary.
